Construction Update: Spring 2024

Utility and Bridge Work Continue This Spring

Following the start of construction last fall on the $39 million Section B contract of Montgomery County’s project to improve travel, safety, and access on Ridge Pike in Plymouth Township, utility installations and relocations (see below, right) by AQUA, PECO, Verizon, and others became the focus in much of the work area between the Belvoir Road and Chemical Road intersections.

A number of utilities made progress on their activities over the winter months. AQUA installed a long section of a new water main and PECO Gas completed the installation of a significant section of a new gas main. Both utilities will begin connecting the new services to customers in the work area this spring.

Construction of a new sanitary sewer main in the center of Ridge Pike by J.D. Eckman on behalf of Plymouth Township will also begin this spring, following its redesign over the winter to avoid other previously unidentified subsurface utilities.

These previously unidentified subsurface utility issues are more common than normal and are resulting in delays in completing the necessary relocation of poles and underground electric and fiber optic lines across the mile-long work zone. As utility issues are resolved, excavation will resume, including the placement of stormwater pipes, inlets, curbs, and sidewalks.

Utility delays have also slowed reconstruction of the Ridge Pike bridge over the Norfolk Southern rail spur east of Belvoir Road, where the northern half of the bridge was removed over the winter (see below). Excavation and demolition at the bridge construction site will resume following the completion of utility work later this spring and continue into the summer.

Meanwhile, J.D. Eckman continues to work on the Ridge Pike bridges over Interstate 476 and the adjacent Plymouth Creek (see below). The center line of the bridge is being reconfigured to accommodate a signalized intersection at the top of the southbound I-476 ramp to Ridge Pike at the Norristown Exit (18B) that will allow turns onto either eastbound or westbound Ridge Pike. Improvements to the overpass also include a left turn lane from westbound Ridge Pike to northbound I-476. These improvements, along with a left turn lane from westbound Ridge Pike to Alan Wood Road, will eliminate the need for the jug-handle at Alan Wood Road.

Motorists will encounter occasional lane restrictions on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and at night from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM on Ridge Pike during construction. Visit www.ridgepikeproject.com regularly for notifications on when nighttime and weekend work will occur or call 445-266-2826.

Sections A and C are currently under design and Section D is currently under construction between Crescent Avenue and Northwestern Avenue in Whitemarsh Township. For additional information on Section D visit www.ridgepikeproject.com or call 484-534-8188.
