Utility Work & Bridge Demolition Continue This Spring
Phase 2 of Section B construction will continue this spring under Montgomery County’s $40 million project to improve travel, safety, and access on Ridge Pike between Belvoir and Chemical Roads in Plymouth Township.
After Verizon completes the relocation of aerial lines on the eastbound side of Ridge Pike by mid-April, the underground facilities at this location can be abandoned. This will allow the County’s contractor to install the new drainage system and then proceed with full demolition of the bridge over the Norfolk Southern railway (see above).
PECO Gas will continue to relocate the gas main and services along the eastbound lanes of Ridge Pike (see right), which should be completed by the end of April. The Carland Road intersection, in particular, will require overnight work to relocate gas facilities. Access to Carland Road from Ridge Pike will be maintained at all times throughout construction.
PECO Electric and other communications utilities are on track to complete the installation and transfer of their lines to a new duct bank along Alan Wood Road (see bottom-right). Immediately after completion, they will begin installing another duct bank on the westbound side of Ridge Pike between Alan Wood Road and the bridge over Plymouth Creek.
Work at the Ridge Pike bridge over Plymouth Creek near Alan Wood Road is underway to replace the approach slabs (see below), make deck modifications, and relocate expansion dams to better accommodate regular maintenance of the bridge.
A minor traffic switch took place in late March, isolating the middle of Ridge Pike from Alan Wood Road through Regal Drive. This new traffic pattern will allow the County’s contractor to install the previously postponed Plymouth Township sanitary sewer main.
The Ridge Pike construction team continues to coordinate with the Royal Farms construction team for their new facility
at the corner of Alan Wood Road and Ridge Pike. Public access for Royal Farms will be restricted to Alan Wood Road until the jughandle can be removed.
Motorists may encounter lane restrictions on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and at night from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM on Ridge Pike during construction.
Visit this website regularly for notifications on when nighttime and weekend work will occur. You may also call 445-266-2826 with any project-related questions or concerns.
The County thanks the traveling public and the businesses along this corridor for their continued patience and understanding during this construction project.
J.D. Eckman, of Atglen, PA, is the Section B general contractor. Sections A and C are currently under design. Section D of the Ridge Pike Improvement Project was completed at the end of 2024. For additional information on all sections of this project, visit www.ridgepikeproject.com.
